Its so funny. Makes me feel so not alone. Gosh.
I mean, before I came to Norway, I already expected some of this. But sometimes, it still gets into you.
I've been asked by 1 of my ogl: which part of China is Sg in?
I reply " we're not in China. We're in Southeast Asia"
She looked so puzzled, I figured she didnt know where Southeast Asia is. Well, credit to her, she admitted that she was bad in geography.
Then in Bergen, I met 2 Jehova Witness. I was simply alone, on a bicycle, looking at the map for directions when they approach, with some Book on God and Church and Meaning of Life. So I asked them which church they are from and that im a christian, and I smiled. They looked horrified and said they are Jehova Witness. I said im from Sg and they asked which part of China is Sg in. -_-" IF GIVEN ANOTHER CHANCE, I WOULD TELL THEM THAT YOUR BLOODY RELIGION IS ILLEGAL IN SINGAPORE.
A few other incidences.
Kristina (from Latvia): You're Singaporean.
Me: Yes
K: What lang do u speak
Me: English
K: What else
Me: Chinese
K: why do you speak chinese
Me: Cos im chinese
K: But u're singaporean, how can u be chinese.
Me: Im singaporean chinese. We dont have like indigeneous people. Its not like Japan - Japanese purely.
K: Why not
Me: Its history.
I met a Turkish woman once.
I wonder why is she so stupid to ask me for directions.
Very very luckily for her, this time, I know that place.
Me: "ure not from norway."
She: "No, im from turkey"
Me: "im not from norway either"
She: "I can see that."
Me (then why the hell, you ask me for directions damn it. Maybe cos u're an immigrant and wants to get to the the immigration office and assume that I had been there, well. I had been there.)
She: "well, u must have done well in ur english placement test to be able to study here"
Me: "what test?"
She: "u mean u had no english placement test?"
Me: "No"
She: "why not? how long have u learnt english?"
Me: "Since I was born"
She: "What? What languages do you speak in Singapore?"
Me: "English."
She: "Singapore doesnt have Singaporish, own language?"
Me: "Its english"
There was once, Huixiang called me from Tronheim, and for the 1st time in 1 month, I spoke SINGLISH and I was so damn happy :))). After we hang up, Jacob (czech guy) called me and I spoke in my Singapore accent, tone, and speed and he replied "wow, john, english please"
Damn it. I am speaking in English. I used to think that the british, american, and aussies talk too fast. But now I realised, after Peter heard juling and sylvia talk, that Singapore English, is too fast for everyone else to catch. So we're on the same playing level as every other native speakers of English.
I get so sick and tired of telling everyone that my damn small tiny country has everything in English, that I AM A NATIVE SPEAKER OF EN Just because we're Asian, doesnt mean our english is bad. Damn you europeans, esp the Dutch, my English seriously owns all of yours. Just because you are better at phonetics (cos ur european mother tongue trains ur phonetics well and SIngaporeans are too lazy to pronounce the "R" in their words - we say couRse and cos the same way. They dont.), doesnt mean my english is BAD. Gosh, I wish my project group would actually, for once, trust my interpretation of the passage, the question, the phrasing of sentences, and stop questioning (cos u waste so much time asking the lecturer what this simple sentence means when I told u a million times), and the Dutch, for once, stop believeing that ur english is the best in europe and that everyone should trust your english interpretation. (Srsly, I believe that if I did not edit that assignment last minute, we wldnt get such a high grade. Regardless of how you -that Dutch girl - insist that your interpretation of the question is right, it is OBVIOUSLY wrong. Believe me. I study everything in English, did all my exams in English, since I was Born.)
Good news is - I possibly can complete my readings 2 times faster than everyone else. Cos Im used to reading, in English. YESSAA! :)
